The broad field of animation splits into critical specializations, notably Character Animation and VFX Animation. A Character Animator focuses on bringing rigged characters to life with personality, emotion, and believable performance, relying heavily on the 12 Principles to exaggerate reality for appeal. Their goal is acting and storytelling through movement. In contrast, a VFX Animator (or FX Artist) specializes in generating complex, realistic, physics-based effects like fire, water, destruction, and particles, often needing a deep technical understanding of simulation software like Houdini.

Choosing a path early is key for targeted portfolio development. While both roles require strong foundational animation skills (timing, weight, and physics), the character artist needs acting and body mechanics in their reel, and the VFX artist needs examples of dynamic simulations that seamlessly integrate with live-action or 3D environments. Our curriculum helps students identify their strengths and tailor their studies toward the highly specific skill sets demanded by these specialized industry roles.
