Storyboards for action sequences—such as chase scenes, battles, or complex physical comedy—require a specialized,highly dynamic approach that utilizes techniques like multiple impact panels and flow lines. Unlike dialogue scenes,action storyboards focus less on subtle facial expressions and more on clarity of motion, momentum, and the precise physical relationship between characters and their environment at every fraction of a second. The storyboard artist must clearly indicate the path of action to avoid confusing the viewer with ambiguous or jarring cuts, ensuring the audience can follow the fast-paced events intuitively.

In our practical studies, students analyze how studios like Pixar or Studio Ghibli utilize rapid visual shifts and strong perspective changes to heighten excitement and danger without sacrificing visual coherence. We train students to use techniques like “cheating” the camera (adjusting perspective for dramatic effect) and drawing sequential arrows and visual guides to convey speed and force, which are vital instructions for the animation and layout teams. Mastering the action storyboard is key to animating sequences that are both thrilling and technically readable for the entire production crew.
